Kilopower could Provide Power for Space Missions

Kilopower, NASA

NASA is working at developing a power technology that could provide power to extended space missions to Mars and beyond. Deemed Kilopower, the system is a nuclear reactor that is superior to previous powerplants used in the Voyagers and Curiosity spacecrafts. Those crafts used radioisotope that degraded over time but produced electricity.  According to NASA, the new technology was successful across all areas of startup, steady performance, and efficiency. All scenarios were thrown at the reactor and it performed.”We threw everything we could at this reactor, in terms of nominal and off-normal operating scenarios, and KRUSTY passed with flying colors,” said David Poston, chief reactor designer at the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos National Laboratory.
